Construction of the Charlestown Elevated Line is shown here underway on November 8, 1900, at the corner of Canal and Haverhill Streets, above an assortment of horse-drawn vehicles. The impressive stone building on the left is the depot of the Fitchburg Railroad; built in 1848, it was demolished in 1926. The upper floor of the station contained a hall where the “Swedish Nightingale” Jenny Lind performed on October 11 and 12, 1850.

On July 19, 1901 an El train bound for Sullivan Square in Charlestown stopped at the North Station Elevated Station, designed by Alexander W. Longfellow, who designed all the stations on the original elevated system. This photograph was taken looking toward Haymarket Square with Haverhill Street in the foreground.
